After three years off, El Paso Water’s DiscoverE family event is back to showcase the wonderful world of water engineering from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the TecH2O Learning Center, 10751 Montana Ave.
The TecH2O team hopes DiscoverE inspires the next generation of EPWater employees by spotlighting the many innovative ways engineers are “Creating the Future.” The center’s popular signature event will commemorate Engineers Week (Feb. 20-24).
Ready for fun
This year’s theme – Creating the Future – also applies to the current state of the TecH2O Center, said Water Conservation/TecH2O Manager Jennifer Barr.
“We have several new staff, and we’re under new leadership,” said Barr, whose team has been working hard to draw families out to the free event by planning fun activities with engineers from the utility. Other engineers from the American Council of Engineering Companies of El Paso, the University of Texas at El Paso and Western Technical College will also participate.
“We would like to get as many families as we can out here,” Barr said. “We had such a good response to the previous School Break Water Discovery Series events that gave us hope and inspiration. We had more than 100 kids at the last two events.”
What to expect
New attractions on the roster are Touch-A-Truck, featuring EPWater’s heavy equipment and operators, as well as competitive challenges pairing middle- and high school students. Prizes will be awarded to challenge winners.
Information will also be available for a new TecH2O/La Nube children’s museum art contest for students from elementary to high school. Winning entries will be displayed in the museum’s Spin Cycle exhibit, which will feature a section of washing machine windows displaying artwork and videos.
The TecH2O team also lined up UTEP’s DiscoverE mobile classroom, powered by solar panels, and El Paso Electric’s Chevrolet Bolt, a compact electric car. Food trucks will also be onsite.
“Kids of all ages are also going to have a good time regardless,” Barr said. “Entire families can have a good time exploring the world of water.”
