It was a long time coming, but El Paso Water employees presented their Charity of Choice – La Posada Home Inc. – with a check for $50,000 on Sept. 14 at the Public Service Board meeting.

The check came two years after La Posada Home was officially named EPWater’s Charity of Choice and COVID-19 derailed in-house fundraising efforts.

Where the money will go

Funds raised by the EPWater employee campaign will benefit La Posada, a transitional living shelter offering safe housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children since 1986. Seventy-five percent of residents are children under the age of 12, said La Posada Director Monica Barrera, adding 98% of residents become self-sufficient.

“Most of our funding is for operations, and we rarely get monies for renovation,” Barrera said. “This donation will allow us to fix, upgrade and renovate the shelter, where we can provide a dignified place where residents can heal. I’m very emotional because we usually do not get these kinds of donations.”

The Charity of Choice Committee kicked off the fundraising season earlier this year. Employees donate their personal time and services to organize fundraising events, such as volleyball and golf tournaments as well as snack sales and supply drives.

Giving thanks

Charity of Choice Committee members join La Posada Home staff members after the check presentation.During the check presentation, Operations Supervisor Michael Dubrule, a committee member, acknowledged EPWater employees for their strenuous efforts.

“I know it takes a lot of time and effort, and it’s really appreciated,” Dubrule said.

“We didn’t know what the outcome was going to be because we were on hold for about two years,” said campaign Chair Zulema Jamis, Senior Secretary. “People were still hesitant to participate in certain events because of COVID. But after putting the fundraising campaign together and proceeding with it, we saw a good turnout. We still skipped a couple events, but even without those events, I think we did great.”

PSB Chair Kristina Mena also recognized EPWater employees for a job well done.

“I would like to say thank you to El Paso Water but also to La Posada,” Mena said. “Thank you for all that you do for the women and children who need you so desperately.”

To be considered for EPWater’s next Charity of Choice, organizations must email EPWater by Jan. 1, 2023. Please include non-profit status, whether the organization is locally based or connected to a national organization, specific needs and why the non-profit should be EPWater’s next Charity of Choice.
