Open Spaces

Open spaces provide flood protection and promote healthy lifestyles.

As part of the 2008 stormwater ordinance, El Paso Water must take into account the use of open space as natural drainage, and to the extent that is reasonably possible preserve the city’s open spaces, greenways, arroyos and wilderness areas in their natural state. The ordinance also specifies that 10 percent of the system’s annual utility fee be allocated for such green projects.

As of early 2017, El Paso Water has purchased and preserved 512 acres of open space property that reduces flooding.
