Doniphan partially closed for stormwater work

Traffic Alert: Lane restrictions at Doniphan Dr. and Frontera Rd.

EL PASO – Beginning Monday, August 3, Doniphan Dr. at Frontera Rd. will be partially closed as El Paso Water begins emergency repairs on a stormwater junction box, which is a below ground structure that captures and redirects stormwater from multiple drain pipes. This work is necessary to protect the safety of drivers and pedestrians and to improve the stormwater system in the area.

“Because of high groundwater in the area, the junction box near the sidewalk has sunk and is beginning to break, creating a public safety issue,” said Chief Technical Officer Gilbert Trejo. “Every time it rains, the problem becomes worse. So, we’re going to replace the box and connect the structure with stronger materials using technology that will protect the groundwater and stabilize the soil.”

Starting on Aug. 10, the two northbound lanes of Doniphan Dr. near Frontera Rd. will close between Kappa Rd. and Atlantic Rd. The southbound lanes will convert to two-way traffic with one lane in each direction to accommodate northbound traffic. This traffic pattern will be in place for approximately six months.

The public is encouraged to plan ahead and seek alternate routes during the construction.
