Utility to discuss major stormwater investments and the future of flood resilience
EL PASO – Twenty years after the devastating floods that transformed El Paso's approach to stormwater management, El Paso Water will host a media event highlighting the investments helping prepare the region for future storms.
The 2006 floods caused more than $315 million in damage across El Paso and underscored the need for a dedicated, long-term approach to stormwater management. In response, City Council established the stormwater utility in 2008 and gave EPWater broad authority and responsibility for the City’s stormwater system, including planning and capital improvements and operations and maintenance.
EPWater officials will discuss how the utility has strengthened El Paso’s resilience, reduced flood risk and improved flood protection through investments in infrastructure and maintenance. The briefing will also include an update on the Will Ruth Pond project, the largest stormwater detention pond in utility history that will play a key role in protecting Northeast El Paso from future flooding.
