Project to reduce main breaks in East El Paso

EL PASO – El Paso Water will host a community meeting to inform residents and businesses on the fifth milestone of the Pipeline Protection Project near the intersection of Yarbrough Dr. and Vista del Sol Dr. A presentation will begin at 6 p.m. in both English and Spanish, staff will also be available to answer questions.

To help reduce future water main breaks, EPWater is replacing metal water mains that cross major gas pipelines with corrosion resistant pipe at five locations in East El Paso. The replacement is necessary because gas pipelines use cathodic protection (low level electric current) which can cause nearby metal water pipes to corrode over time.

The project will be completed in two phases. Phase I will replace a 24-inch water main under the southbound lanes of Yarbrough Dr. just north of the Vista del Sol intersection. This will require lane closures on southbound Yarbrough. Phase 2, scheduled to begin in January 2027, will close northbound Yarbrough from Vista del Sol to Candlewood Ave. to replace 54-inch and 48-inch water mains.

Beginning July 20, construction will begin on the fifth milestone. Drivers and residents should expect temporary lane closures, detours and changing traffic patterns in the area
